Why do we use tooltips?
Our reviews contain a lot of data. We have an overall performance score, eight category ratings, subscores, and dozens of individual scored tests.
This level of detail makes our reviews more helpful and accurate, but it can also feel overwhelming.
We have received plenty of emails from readers who simply want to know which app is the best. If we bored those people to death with a crazy number of statistics and data points, our reviews would quickly become annoying.
That is why we place a lot of the additional information inside tooltips. You can choose to open them when you want more context without having all the data displayed on the page at once.
Each tooltip can be recognized by the icon shown below.
On desktop, you can open a tooltip by hovering over it. On mobile, simply tap the tooltip icon.
We currently use five main types of tooltips.
1. Product information tooltips
Product information tooltips can be found in our directories, including the directory on our homepage.
They appear next to certain text and give you some quick additional information about a platform, such as what it is best for and anything you may need to watch out for.

They give you a quick one-line explanation of how the app performed in our testing.

3. Category score tooltips
Category score tooltips explain how an AI girlfriend app performed in a specific category, such as Chat, Images, Privacy, or Pricing.
They show you:
- The app’s score for that category
- The average category score across all the apps we have reviewed
- The subscores that make up the category rating
- A score distribution showing how the app compares with other apps
- Used on review pages
- Used on roundup pages
- Opens from category score icon

For example, selecting the range from 8.9 to 9.2 will show you all the reviewed apps with a category score between 8.9 and 9.2.

Subscore tooltips work similarly to category score tooltips, but they go one level deeper.
They quickly explain what the subscore measures and show you:

- The evidence used to calculate the score
- A score distribution comparing the app with others

5. Additional information tooltips
We may also use smaller tooltips in other parts of the site whenever something needs a quick explanation.
These might explain a feature, term, calculation, warning, or piece of information that could otherwise be confusing.
It would not be worth listing every single tooltip on this page. Otherwise, you would still be here tomorrow.
The important thing to remember is simple: whenever you see a tooltip icon, hover over it on desktop or tap it on mobile to get more context.

Why not show all methodology directly on every review?
Reviews already contain a large amount of testing data. Tooltips let us keep pages scannable while still giving curious readers a clear path to the full methodology when they want it.
Do tooltips affect the score?
No. Tooltips explain scores. They do not calculate, change, or override any rating.
Are tooltip results updated when reviews change?
Yes. When we retest an app or update methodology, the underlying score data changes and the tooltip content reflects the current result.
Can I open tooltips on mobile?
Yes. On touch devices, tooltips open after tapping the info icon and can be dismissed without leaving the page.
