Why Doesn’t Character AI Allow NSFW Content?
The founders of Character AI haven’t stated why they don’t allow NSFW content.1 However, there are multiple speculations to this question.
Reason 1: Faith in God
There is this famous Reddit Thread where a user says that:
“Because the creators both believe and have faith in God and they cannot allow others to indulge in sexual sin otherwise they believe that God will be disappointed in them.”
I believe in god as well and often doubt the ethicality of NSFW chatbots so this could be a good reason for the developers to exclude NSFW.
Reason 2: Minors
Next up we got the issue many NSFW chatbots face – minors are using them. Chatbots like GPTGirlfriend and Crushon AI have an NSFW toggle. Flip it, and it will ask you if you are 18+ or not.
If I were a minor, it would be very easy for me to hit that purple button and just say I’m over 18. There’s even this article from The Guardian which says that a whopping 1 in every 10 kids have watched porn.2
It’s extremely hard for websites in the adult niche to monitor whether or not minors are using their services so that’s why c.ai might have decided to ban it.
Reason 3: They May Lose Market Share
Different countries (and regions) have various rules on what they allow. The same goes for AI pornography and other sexual content. Character AI is the most popular AI chatbot after ChatGPT and is used by people from all over the globe.3
One big reason Character AI keeps it PG is all about where it can be accessed. If they start allowing the racy stuff, a bunch of places around the world would block access to the site.
This isn’t just a maybe; it’s a definite, especially in many countries where the rules about what’s okay and what’s not on the internet are super strict.
Here’s a quick list of countries where Character AI could get a big “No Entry” sign if it went the NSFW route4:
- Qatar
- Syria
- Turkmenistan
- Turkey
- Pakistan
- Oman
- Eritrea
- The United Arab Emirates
Out of all these countries, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) stands out for Character AI. Though it’s ranked #50 on Google Trends in terms of Character AI’s popularity, the UAE’s market could still significantly impact its revenue and market share.
Reason 4: Hard to Monitor
Allowing NSFW would be a real pain in the *ss to monitor. Every now and then, AI characters that go against the character AI’s policy will slip through the grasp of moderators.
The Evening Standard recently did research on C.AI and they discovered that some users were creating fascist chatbots. Keep in mind that this is despite a strict zero-NSFW policy.5
Allowing NSFW content could make moderation even more challenging for Character AI.
What Is NSFW Content?
Character AI does not have a specific NSFW policy where they state that you can not create a chatbot that does X Y Z. Instead they say that they simply do not allow NSFW. This raises the question; What is NSFW?
A lot of people think that NSFW content has something to do with sexual roleplay. This is not entirely true. Sex is just one thing that falls under the NSFW umbrella but it also contains stuff like;
- Sexual Stuff: Anything that’s sexually explicit or meant to turn up the heat.
Example: A chatbot sharing adult-themed stories or pictures.
- Violence: Graphic or intense scenes of people hurting each other.
Example: Sharing images or descriptions of violent actions.
- Hate Speech: Words that attack or demean people because of who they are.
Example: A bot spreading messages that insult a particular community.
- Bullying: Picking on someone or making them feel small on purpose.
Example: A chatbot designed to send mean messages.
- Illegal Activities: Stuff that’s against the law.
Example: Sharing how-tos on breaking into buildings.
- Private Info Without Permission: Sharing personal details about someone without their OK.
Example: A bot leaking someone’s private contact details.
- Gross Medical Stuff: Really graphic medical scenes or details.
Example: Videos or detailed descriptions of surgeries.
- Too Much Swearing: A lot of curse words or foul language.

By now you know that Character AI does not allow NSFW content. However, there is a way to bypass the NSFW filter.
How do you ask?
By simply using a free Character AI alternative.

- Click on Sign in.
- Create an account using your email and a password.
- Once logged in, toggle the NSFW switch at the top of the page.

Character AI’s NSFW Petition
There’s an online petition asking Character AI to get rid of the NSFW filter, and it’s got over 147,000 signatures. The developers haven’t answered it yet, but if enough people ask, they might think about it.

Wrapping Up and My Experience With Character AI
I’ve been using Beta Character AI for over a year and frankly, I don’t really care about the NSFW filter. There are tons of C.AI alternatives that are just as good so if I want to take the NSFW route I simply use one of those apps.
